Covenant University Students Warned About Climate Change

An accomplished architect and teacher, Wole Adebayo, has
warned architecture students
of Covenant University, Ota
to take the responsibility of
having the right mix of variables in place in the design and building of
properties in order to guard against adverse effects
of climate change.

Adebayo, who was the Guest Speaker at the Town and Gown Seminar of the Department of
Architecture held recently, said the proposed trend of development in architecture as it relates to
Nigeria is concerned with issues of energy conservation.

He described climate change as, "a large scale long- term shift in global or regional weather patterns attributed largely to increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse effect thereby resulting in Global warming."

Adebayo said: "The degeneration of building components, human discomfort, energy shortage,
building collapse and fire outbreak are a few of the effects of climate change on buildings."

The design roles of practicing architects, he outlined, "include adaptation and mitigation,
sustainable green architecture, material choice, type of energy source, site planning and building
orientation, solar control and shading devices, seismic designs and use of energy rating software.

" In his reaction, the Head of the Architecture Department, Dr. Ibem Eziyi, lauded the guest speaker and members of the department for making the event a success. He urged the students to apply principles taught for their individual development.
